ESMA was founded in January 2006 as the official body representing the European producers of specific specialty minerals, namely andalusite, mica, sepiolite and vermiculite.

The association provides its members with a forum in which to tackle regulatory, technical, health and safety and environmental issues and assures the representation of specialty minerals at national and EU authority levels. It is a member of IMA-Europe, the European Industrial Minerals Association.
